Location and height of a reception desk in an office
LOCATION AND HEIGHT OF A RECEPTION DESK IN A OFFICE

Where placing the reception desk in an office? This is a common question when planning the layout of an office space. The logical answer would be to place it where it can be seen, but the location can be enriched much more with other complements.
At DESMON we are specialists in office furniture. Throughout our 50 years of history we have been involved in fitting out workplaces, commercial premises and offices. Our experience has allowed us to quickly identify the ideal place to place the reception desk in an office. In addition, we have worked on the location of the furniture with the visitor in mind, as well as the employee who receives him or her.
It goes without saying that there are many factors that can influence the optimal placement of the counter. However, with the help of our design team, we are going to give you the 2 most interesting keys so that you can evaluate all the options and elements. We will also talk about the right height. That way, it will be easier to get it right when it comes to placing the reception desk in an office.
IDEAS FOR OFFICE RECEPTION DESK PLACEMENT
Of course, when it comes to equipping a space with office furniture, the available space will be a determining factor. Knowing the available square metres of the reception area is essential for choosing the right location. We expand on this question and look at lighting in more detail.
POSITIONING THE COUNTER ACCORDING TO THE SPACE
The entrance area to an office should be comfortable, functional and equipped with a counter. If the space is large, the counter should ideally be placed in the centre of the space or just in front of the back wall. It should always be visible from the entrance and should also be easily identifiable as an information point for the visitor or potential client.
If you have a large central space, you can opt for a circular counter. In this way, the space available for information will be larger and you will even be able to have a certain amount of privacy. If you choose to place the counter at the back, the unit should be large and you can add some chairs in the side area.
In both cases, the height should be different inside and outside. The visitor should be able to stand comfortably and be able to rest his or her arms. An optimal height for this is 110 cm.
The employee, on the other hand, should be able to sit down and have a table top at a height of around 80 cm to be able to work comfortably. They should also be able to stand up and position themselves at the height of the visitor.
If the space available is limited, the location also varies. Ideally, the reception desk in a small office should be placed right at the entrance and on the left-hand side. From there, the rest of the office facilities can be spread out to the right.
PLACE THE COUNTER IN A WELL-LIT AREA
Lighting is a fundamental aspect when it comes to the positioning of the reception desk in an office. It is important to bear in mind that, as well as being visible from the entrance, the counter must have well-lit spaces.
Firstly, because the visitor’s easy identification as a place of information is even more important. Secondly, because the customer may need to read a document or prove his or her identity. For all these reasons, it is advisable to have good lighting.
If natural light is available, it is always a good idea to multiply it with transparent screens. In the case of artificial light, LED technology is a good idea.
And one last point: when it comes to placing the reception desk in an office, you should avoid shaded areas that can obscure and hinder the visitor’s attention.
