WARDROBE DOORS: TYPES AND HOW TO DECORATE THEM

The furniture in a room is the most important decorative element. In bedrooms and living rooms it is even more important. Undoubtedly, the design, the distribution of the shelves and the colour are key elements. However, there is a fundamental piece that distinguishes them from each other and that is the wardrobe doors.

The front of the piece is important when it comes to decorating a room. And doors play a key role. Choosing the right wardrobe doors can mean increasing the comfort of the space, getting more storage space or giving the area a decorative plus.

Once you have decided to install a built-in or traditional wardrobe, it is time to choose the doors. Without a doubt, you need to spend time thinking about the best option and consider the variables of front space and decorative style.

At DESMON we have a section dedicated exclusively to the design, manufacture and assembly of wardrobe doors. Our design team adapts to the available space and also to the client’s needs. Of course, the decision between the different types of door is a personal matter.

In this post we want to talk to you about the different models of wardrobe doors and about the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Follow us and don’t miss any detail.

TYPES OF WARDROBE DOORS: HINGED, SLIDING OR FOLDING DOORS

There are 3 types of wardrobe doors on the market. Choosing one or the other will depend on the space available and also on the decorative style of the rest of the room. Let’s review the options.

HINGED DOORS: THE ECONOMICAL CHOICE

Hinged doors are the most economically affordable. They are easy to design and assemble and only require hinges to be fitted. Therefore, no accessories such as guides or rails are required. All this means that the price is lower.

Without a doubt, the hinged door type is the most suitable for large rooms. It should be borne in mind that these pieces require a free space right in front of them in order to be able to open the door fully. The space must therefore be free of obstacles.

In the event of sagging, it is easy to fix, as only the hinges need to be replaced.

SLIDING DOORS: FOR SMALL SPACES

Sliding doors are ideal for small rooms. This is because you don’t need any space to open the door. Simply slide it on the guides to gain access to the inside of the wardrobe.

On the other hand, sliding doors need to be handled a little more carefully. The reason is that the system includes guides, rails or stops that should be in good condition. If they are used roughly, the leaves can come out of the guides and prevent the leaf from moving comfortably.

When the wardrobe is of large dimensions, the best bet is to use Japanese-style doors. They only allow a part of the wardrobe to be visible, but it is a very elegant style. In addition, an interesting factor is that they can be decorated with vinyls or a melamine finish that imitates any type of wood.

FOLDING DOORS: FOR NARROW WARDROBES

Folding doors are doors that fold back on themselves with an accordion system. They are certainly rarely used in bedroom or living room wardrobes, but they are an option for narrow built-in wardrobes. They are often used for storage of cleaning utensils or in wardrobes in garages or basements.

It should be borne in mind that the opening will never be complete because the leaf folds back on itself at the end of its travel and takes up some space.

HOW TO DECORATE WARDROBE DOORS

Once the wardrobe doors have been fitted, we can consider adding some decoration. Of course, if the door already has a nice appearance or imitates a variety of wood such as oak or beech or any other material, we can choose to leave it bare.

However, if we want to give it a personal touch, it is possible to use decorative elements. Vinyls and handles are the best options.

Handles or knobs are very interesting decorative resources. Without a doubt, they can complete the appearance of the door and give it a modern, classic or more rustic style. There is an infinite number of models on the market: metal, plastic, wood. There are also designs with straight or curved lines. It’s just a matter of taking a look at the rest of the decoration of the room and deciding which piece fits best and doesn’t clash with the rest of the room.

In recent years, vinyls have become a decorative element that offers many possibilities. They can be placed on wardrobe doors and achieve a very original finish. It is possible to play with colours, motifs or even motivational phrases that can be formed with the 3 or 4 leaves of the doors.

Another interesting option is to paint the wardrobe. Applying colour to the shelves and also to the doors can completely transform the piece and renew the look of the whole room.

It is advisable to do this in good time and remove all the fittings before starting to apply the coats of paint. It is also advisable to protect the floor and nearby walls.
