SAVING WATER IN THE OFFICE

Ahorro de agua en la oficina | DESMON

Saving water in the office is almost a must. Climate change is undoubtedly reducing the frequency of rainfall and raising temperatures. Saving water is therefore essential to avoid future water restrictions. Surely, everyone at home applies certain measures to encourage the conservation of such a precious commodity as water. But what happens when we go to work? Well, we should also be aware of the problem. And that means doing everything possible to encourage water saving in the office.

At DESMON we are dedicated to manufacturing and assembling office equipment. Our catalogue includes furniture, flooring and phenolic material. It is precisely with the latter that we contribute to saving water in the office. In addition, with this post we want to offer tips to save and not waste water in the workplace.

COMMUNICATION PLAN FOR SAVING WATER IN THE OFFICE

When rolling out a plan to encourage water saving in the office, communication is vital. It is essential that all employees are aware of the project and what the interventions will be.

A good option is to provide data on monthly and annual water consumption in the workplace. This will give employees a clear idea of how many litres are used. Similarly, it is necessary to explain how and where it is possible to save water and to explain this to all staff.

The aim is to raise staff awareness and involve them in the savings project. The message of rational and sensible use should be conveyed.

Now, the following are a series of points to promote water saving in the office. It is essential that each work centre adapts it to its size and work system.

1.- CONSUMPTION DATA

The first step to promote water saving in the office is to know how much water is consumed. It is also interesting to know where it is produced. Through this study it will be possible to know the consumption in toilets, refrigeration, rest rooms and water sources.

Based on this data, it will be easier to focus on the areas where it is most appropriate to implement water-saving measures.

2.- PHENOLIC FURNITURE: EASY TO CLEAN AND HYGIENIC

Of course, cleanliness is essential in an office. Employees must work in a hygienic and clean environment. For this reason, in most workplaces, daily cleaning tasks are carried out. It goes without saying that these tasks are indispensable, but changes can be made that have a positive impact on water saving.

DESMON always recommends the use of phenolic material in washrooms, toilets and changing rooms in offices. The reason is that it is a very easy to clean substrate.

Sanitary cabins made of phenolic material are completely smooth. They have no pores that can harbour bacterial growth. They are completely smooth surfaces that can be cleaned in one wipe with a damp cloth. This means that litres and litres of water do not have to be used to completely sanitise the furniture. Hygiene is complete and is achieved with the use of little water.

3.- REVISION OF INSTALLATIONS

The company’s maintenance team should make every effort to check the state of the installations. The aim is to repair any water leaks that may have occurred. In this way, water losses will be avoided and any damage that the leak may have caused will be repaired.

4.- FITTING OUT WASHBASINS AND TOILETS

Washbasins and toilets are one of the most sensitive areas in terms of water consumption. It is clear that certain measures can be taken in these areas that will be very effective. Some of them may seem obvious but it is worth remembering them.

Do not leave taps running. It may seem obvious but it is essential that taps are not left running. Even when washing hands, it is advisable to turn off the tap while soaping. It is important to remember that a badly turned off tap can waste up to 30 litres of water a day.

Install taps that activate when they feel you are present. We are talking about those models of taps that let the water flow when they feel your hands near them. In this way, they are only activated when someone is washing their hands and only for the necessary time.

Half-flush cisterns. There are cistern models on the market with different flushing intensities. Thus, it is not always necessary to flush the toilet completely and it is sufficient to activate the half-flush button.

Do not use the toilet as a wastepaper basket. When you have finished drying your hands, it is better to throw the paper in the wastepaper basket and not dispose of it in the toilet. In this way, we will avoid the almost automatic gesture of flushing the toilet so that the paper disappears.

5.- AIR CONDITIONING

Air conditioners use a considerable amount of water. Every time someone lowers the temperature because they have the heat, the water consumption increases. It is therefore important not to vary the temperature too often. Ideally, the temperature in the office should be between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius.
