PLAYROOM. RENOVATION AND DECORATION
Our home is our refuge and at home, we all have a favourite place. It can be a reading corner, the bedroom or a dream bathroom. The children in the house can also enjoy a space of their own such as a playroom.
If there is space available, a dedicated room can always be set up. Whether for the little ones or for teenagers, having an exclusive area is a great idea.
At DESMON Reform we are specialists in carrying out all types of reforms in homes or commercial premises. Our experience tells us that it is becoming more and more common for parents to consider reforming and decorating a playroom.
That way, the little ones can spend time in an environment that suits their age and needs. They can play, draw, read or spend time with their friends. And the best thing is that they do it in an exclusive space and do not «invade» other areas of the home such as the living room or the kitchen.
With this article we want to give you ideas on how to organise and decorate a playroom. There are a series of issues that must be taken into account so that the «little ones» are at ease. Take note of all our tips.
TYPE OF FURNITURE AND MATERIALS FOR THE PLAYROOM
Before starting to discuss the possible decoration or layout, it is necessary to clarify a few preliminary questions. Remember that this is a playroom intended mainly for children. What does that mean? Well, it means that children draw, paint, jump, run, snack… In other words, there are bound to be drops of watercolours on the floor, pieces of paper, biscuit crumbs or shoe prints on the walls.
It is therefore important to use washable and easy-to-clean materials. On the other hand, furniture pieces should be resistant to knocks and impacts. Forget about delicate furniture with lacquered or glass finishes. It is also interesting to protect the floor with carpets or comfortable flooring.
On the other hand, textiles such as armchair covers, cushions, pillows or blankets should ideally be machine washable. Last but not least, we suggest that you place washable skirting on the walls. The height can be up to 80 cm or 1 metre. This way, the wall will be protected and any dirt or marks can be removed with a damp cloth.
FUN, PRACTICAL AND SAFE PLAYROOM
Certainly, a playroom should be a welcoming and fun space. The purpose of the room is for the little ones in the house to have fun and enjoy themselves. Therefore, when refurbishing the room or decorating it, it is advisable to take into account the tastes of its small users.
Fun. The room should look attractive. Children need to be able to identify images, colours or accessories that they like and recognise.
Go for cheerful colours without the need for them to be garish. Place pieces such as teepees where children can hide, trellises where they can climb or mats where they can jump.
Practice. Remember that clutter is likely to be a common occurrence in the play area. For this reason, opt for furniture with a good capacity where toys can be easily stored. This way, children will be able to collaborate.
Try to ensure that the layout does not get in the way and that it is easy to walk or even run around. Finally, we remind you once again of the need to use washable materials.
Safe. The safety of children is an essential condition in any playroom. Check all the furniture with dedication. Protect corners and remove any sharp edges.
Put guards on sockets and prevent children from accessing them easily. Finally, make sure bulky furniture is firmly anchored to the wall.
IDEAS FOR DECORATING THE PLAYROOM
At this point we return to the idea that the decoration should be adapted to the tastes of the boys or girls in the house. It is advisable to include some accessory that connects with their inclinations.
Does he like basketball? Include a small basket at a low height. Does he prefer dancing? Then place a bar and a mirror so that he can see his movements.
FURNITURE
Wardrobes are a must in a playroom. And if it is possible to have a built-in wardrobe model, so much the better. That way, more space is used and the surface of the doors can be integrated into the decor.
Another essential accessory is the table. Remember that it should be at their height and have chairs of a suitable size. On the table, children can paint, draw, do crafts or read.
Shelves are also an unavoidable piece of furniture. Remember that they must be securely attached to the wall and it is best if they have removable shelves so that they can be adjusted to the desired height. Baskets, boxes or drawers containing toys or children’s material can be included in the shelving. Remember to place a shelf at their height for stories and books.
FLOOR AND FLOORING
A cushioned floor is always a good idea. Possible falls are cushioned and it also acts as an acoustic insulator. Foam puzzle pieces are a good idea because they are also very decorative.
Carpets are another good option. It is important that they are soft and slip-resistant. Flooring is a soft, comfortable and insulating alternative.
WALLS
Walls are the biggest sufferers in a playroom. We remind you of the idea of installing a skirting board to protect the surface and absorb possible impacts. A great idea is to turn one of the walls or an area into a blackboard. Here, children can draw and let their imagination run wild.
If you prefer to use wallpaper, there is a wide variety of models on the market. Just remember that it is a children’s room and go for a cheerful and dynamic print. The last option is to paint the walls and put up some fun vinyl. It will be very decorative and will protect the wall.
ACCESORIES
Finally, we suggest that you opt for accessories that are comfortable for the «little ones». If there is space, include a tepee, mats, poufs, cushions, pillows or soft toys. Small armchairs are very decorative and provide an attractive resting place for children.
Finally, it is advisable for playrooms to be stocked with a good range of craft materials. And it’s best if it’s close at hand. Place baskets with their crayons, paintbrushes, sketchpads or play dough.
